A Bronx family with seven children has been left without heat and hot water after Con Edison allegedly shut off the wrong gas line on October 27, 2026, according to Leonnetti Parrilla, who contacted The Bronx Daily seeking assistance.

Parrilla said Con Edison was supposed to shut off gas service to another apartment in the building over an unpaid bill but mistakenly disconnected service to the apartment where the family lives.

Since the incident, Parrilla said there have been repeated attempts to contact Con Edison and request that service be restored. However, despite multiple assurances from representatives, no one has arrived to resolve the situation.

Children With Serious Medical Conditions Among Those Affected

According to Parrilla, the household includes seven children, among them an 8-year-old daughter who has been battling cancer since she was 5, and an 11-month-old infant.

Parrilla also said one child relies on a life-sustaining machine and that the family has a letter on file with Con Edison stating that utility services at the apartment cannot be shut off because of the child’s medical condition.

Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced major progress in the administration’s work to make it easier and less expensive to open and operate a small business in New York City. Since the start of the administration, the Department of Small Business Services (SBS) has helped more than 3,000 small businesses obtain licenses and navigate licensing and permitting — including 97 businesses opening their doors for the first time.

SBS has more than doubled its New York City Business Express Service Team (NYC BEST), adding 17 new Small Business Advocates to help owners navigate City requirements and avoid costly fines and fees. The agency has also recommended more than 50 reforms to eliminate outdated permits, redundant paperwork and unnecessary fines. SBS also advocated for the law that made outdoor dining on City streets permanent and year-round.

Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su and SBS Commissioner Kenny Minaya recently convened the first quarterly meeting of City agencies under Executive Order 18, which Mayor Mamdani signed to speed up licensing and permitting reforms and improve how City agencies work with small business owners.

“Small business owners already work long hours on thin margins. They should not have to spend those hours navigating City bureaucracy or paying fines that have nothing to do with making their business better,” said Mayor Mamdani. “Our job is to make City government easier to deal with. That means cutting unnecessary paperwork, eliminating outdated rules and making it more affordable for working people to open a business in New York City.”

“If you own a small business in this city, you should be able to get a straight answer from the City, no matter which agency you call,” said Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice…

Drill music is loud, dark, unapologetic, and enormously influential. For millions of young listeners, it is more than another style of hip-hop. Drill can be entertainment, storytelling, identity, and, in some communities, a musical account of what young people see happening outside their doors. The concern begins when stories about shootings, gangs, enemies, and retaliation become intertwined with popularity, social media attention, and success.

According to Pitchfork, drill emerged from Chicago in the early 2010s, with teenage rapper Chief Keef becoming one of the movement’s defining figures. His 2012 song “I Don’t Like” helped propel drill into mainstream hip-hop while he was still a teenager. The genre became known for menacing production, hard drums, and lyrics that frequently addressed violence and gang-dominated street life.

Drill did not remain in Chicago. It traveled. According to PBS, YouTube played an important role in helping Chicago artists reach audiences outside their neighborhoods, allowing young rappers to distribute music depicting gang life and problems affecting their communities. The sound eventually developed major scenes in places including London and New York, where Brooklyn drill became an important part of the city’s modern hip-hop identity.

The impact on young people, however, is more complicated than simply declaring drill music dangerous. According to research published in Urban Education, drill can function as a form of expression for Black youth. Researchers Kelly R. Allen, Ian Levy, and Edmund Adjapong found that drill could provide opportunities for communalism, emotional expression, and self-empowerment….
