The New York City Health Department urges New Yorkers to protect themselves and their families from tick-borne diseases as summer approaches and people begin to travel and engage in outdoor activity. Ticks carrying pathogens that cause diseases are found on Staten Island and in the North Bronx and are common in many wooded areas outside of the city, including Long Island, upstate New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease among New Yorkers, followed by babesiosis and anaplasmosis.
“As the weather warms and New Yorkers spend more time outdoors, we ask they take precautions to prevent tick bites,” said NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin. “We encourage New Yorkers to use a multistep approach to preventing tick bites including an EPA-registered tick repellent and checking their bodies, as well as their children and pets, for ticks after being in wooded areas that may harbor ticks.”
“With New Yorkers heading outdoors to enjoy the city’s parks this spring and summer, a few simple precautions can go a long way in preventing tick bites,” said NYC Parks Director of Wildlife Richard Simon. “Wearing light-colored clothing makes ticks easier to spot, while tucking your pants into your socks and applying insect repellent to your clothes and shoes adds another layer of protection. Keep in mind that ticks aren’t just found in tall grass, they can hide in short grass too. Stick to our clearly marked hiking trails, watch for colored…

Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced The Peninsula in the Bronx has been selected as the second site for the City’s municipal grocery store program. The 20,000-square-foot store in Hunts Point is expected to open in 2027 and serve as an economic anchor for the South Bronx community.
“Working families in the Bronx have been forced to pay the price for a city that keeps getting more expensive while government looks the other way. That has to change. Our administration is putting communities like Hunts Point at the center of our work to address the affordability crisis,” said Mayor Mamdani. “Making sure every New Yorker can buy fresh, affordable groceries in their own neighborhood is a key part of our affordability agenda. We are proud to begin this work in the South Bronx and remain committed to opening a store in every borough before the end of our first term.”
“No family in the Bronx should have to choose between rent and groceries,” said Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su. “This summer, we will issue a request for proposals to bring in operators who meet our affordability standards, and we will have a store open in Hunts Point by 2027. This is what public investment looks like when it is done right — government setting the terms, holding to a timeline, and making sure the benefits reach the families who need them most.”
Last month, the administration announced La Marqueta in East Harlem as the first site selected for the municipal grocery store program. The Mamdani administration plans to open one store in each borough by the end of the Mayor’s first term.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani today released a World Cup promotional video celebrating New York City’s place at the center of the 2026 FIFA World Cup™.
The video features U.S. Men’s National Team star Tim Weah, players from Gotham FC including Midge Purce and Bronx native Morad Fareed, alongside players from Bronx High School of Science, where Mayor Mamdani played soccer as a student.
Filmed at iconic locations across New York City, including the American Museum of Natural History, the video captures what makes this city the soccer capital of the world: kids on Bronx schoolyards, women competing at the highest level of the sport, immigrant communities that have made soccer a part of the city’s fabric and a mayor who grew up playing in the city he now serves.
“I grew up in this city watching the World Cup with neighbors whose roots stretched across every corner of the globe,” said Mayor Mamdani. “That is what makes New York so special: the whole world already belongs here. This summer, we get to share that with everyone. I have never been more proud to be a New Yorker or to serve as mayor of this city.”
The video draws from across the Mayor’s first months in office, including Soccer Streets programming, the Gotham FC sideline and a Champions League Final watch party at FancyFree in Brooklyn. It also features…
