Bronx Community College defeated the Borough of Manhattan Community College in three sets to win their second straight CUNY Athletic Conference Community College Women’s Volleyball Championship.
Bronx head coach Divina Arroyo was ecstatic after the match. “It’s an indescribable feeling to win back-to-back championships. It’s a dream come true for all of us”.
Sandra Izaguirre lead the Broncos with 20 kills and 12 service aces on the day to win her second straight MVP Award. She took it all in stride: “Volleyball is a real adrenaline rush. I play because I love to play the game and do what I can to help my team win.”
The teams battled back and forth early in the first set until Alexandra Mejia’s two straight service aces gave the Broncos an 8-4 lead. Estefani Liz took over service for the Panthers as they capitalized on seven unforced Broncos errors to post a 15-9 lead. “They came in confident,” Arroyo commented about the Panthers. “I called a time out to give our team a chance to get settled in.”
Fatima Genao took over service for Bronx CC as Izaguirre contributed four kills as part of a seven-point turnaround to give the Broncos a 20-18 lead. Izaguirre then found herself behind the service with a 21-19 lead, and dropped three service aces as part of four point effort to seal the 25-19 first set victory.
The teams battled again early in the second set, until Mejia landed two straight aces to give the Broncos a 10-7 lead. Bronx CC never trailed again in the match, on their way to winning the second set 25-21 and the third set 25-9.
BMCC advanced to the championship by virtue of their two-hour, five set victory against Kingsborough Community College. The Broncos sat back and watched, having dispensed with Queensboro Community College in three sets. “We played good but fatigue was a factor,” BMCC head coach Eder Mathelier commented. “To come from third place and advance all the way to the finals is a great accomplishment.”
Bronx Community College and the Borough of Manhattan Community College advanced to the Championship match in volleyball this evening. Top seeded BCC defeated Queensborough handily 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-12), while #3 BMCC beat #2 Kingsborough in five (25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 17-25, 15-11).
