The life and career of Mariano Rivera will be celebrated by the 161st Street BID outside Yankee Stadium (840 River Avenue) this Sunday at 10:00 a.m. NYC Council Speaker, Melissa Mark-Viverito, will proclaim it, Mariano Rivera Day.

Congressman Jose, E. Serrano will read a resolution by the United States Congress. And, Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson will help unveil two, new baseball legend murals – one of Mariano Rivera and one of his idol, Jackie Robinson.

The new murals are part of a set of fourteen painted in the 161 BID’s district by street muralists, Lexi Bella, Danielle Mastrion and Andre Trenier. The gigantic portraits include: Joe DiMaggio, Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, Satchel Paige, Roberto Clemente, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Yogi Berra, Elston Howard, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth in addition to Jackie and Mariano.

The BID’s Youth Ambassadors will greet fans and give away Jackie & Mariano collectible postcards at local businesses like The Dugout, Yankee Tavern, Billy’s, Yankee Bar & Grill and Stan’s.

“We want fans and neighbors to join in celebrating these great #42’s,“ said Dr. Cary Goodman, the BID’s executive director. “It is Mariano Day inside and outside the ballpark.”

The unveiling ceremony is free and open to the public.

The world-famous JETER METER has been reprogrammed for tonight when Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to play his last game for the Yankees.

The 6’ long electronic sign was last used in 2014 to salute the Yankee Captain as he retired.

Before that it counted down hits as Jeter approached his 3,000th.

The 161st Street BID also operated the Mariano Meter, during the Yankee closer’s pursuit of the all-time ‘saves’ record.

The Mariano Meter has been removed from in front of the ballpark and retired.

During this historic weekend the 161 BID will also be distributing free souvenir postcards and hosting an unveiling of two, new baseball legends murals – Jackie Robinson and Mariano Rivera.
