Dressed in his Boy Scout Uniform (of Troop 162 in the Bronx) he went door to door in his Throggs Neck neighborhood with a jar marked “COINS for HAITI.”

His goal was to raise $100.00 over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend.

Adam’s hopes for $100 were far exceeded by the generosity of his neighbors and local merchants who happily gave coins and bills. Many contributed $5 bills, $10 bills and one merchant donated $20.00. He was surprised to count $298.77 from his jar when he got home.

“…here is $5.00 just for being a Boy Scout doing a great job…” said one merchant donor, “…you are doing a wonderful thing…here is $20.00…” commented a merchant as he helped stuff the jar.

Adam will present his collection to his school’s Principal Kim Hampton Hewitt, and the Student Body at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 21, 2010.

Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) will match the $300 dollars Adam collected. “Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition” will be presented to Adam Israfil “in recognition of outstanding and invaluable service to the community,” by the school’s Principal on behalf of Congressmen Joseph Crowley, who’s office regrets his not being able to attend because “…he is in Washington attending voting sessions.”

The school address is M.S. 101 P.O. Edward R. Byrne School, 2750 Lafayette Ave. Bronx, NY 10465 and their phone number is 718-829-6372.
