This program is part of Make Music Winter. It is co-presented by the Garifuna Coalition, Braata Productions and El Maestro.

This year the focus is on:

Celebrating el Festival del Hatillo (Puerto Rico), Wanaragua (Garifuna) and Jonkunnu (Jamaica).

The Christmas season is a very festive time for Puerto Ricans, on the mainland and the island. During this time groups of strolling musicians go from house to house in parrandas in what is considered the Puerto Rican version of Christmas caroling. During the parranda there is an exchange of music and poetry for food and gifts. Garifuna paranda is both a rhythm and a musical genre. Paranda itself became a genre in the 19th century soon after the Garifuna arrived in Honduras and were introduced to Spanish styles of music, which incorporated the acoustic guitar.

Jonkonnu is a masked celebration performed around Christmas time throughout the Caribbean, in places like Jamaica. The Garifuna version of it is called wanáragua. In Puerto Rico, in Hatillo, the Día de los Inocentes is celebrated with El Festival de la Máscaras on December 29th. All these holidays share some common masquerades and customs, and we’ll take a look at all of them from a musical perspective.

We are asking people to bring toys for donation as we are collecting them for El Maestro’s January 3rd Three King’s celebration (unwrapped, new, non-violent toys please).
