Faith Wins A 17-Year Court Battle

Earlier today, the Alliance Defense Fund won a permanent injunction in a 17-year legal battle involving the Bronx Household of Faith and the NYC Board of Education.

Religious groups will now be allowed to hold religious services and meet freely for worship in public school facilities as any other group can.

The ADF had argued against claims that by allowing congregations to meet in public schools for worship is an endorsement of religion and argues that the church does not do anything different than other religious groups at the school already do.

The Bronx case started in 1995 when the Bronx Househould of Faith’s application to rent a public school building for Sunday services was rejected by the New York City Department o Education. The ADF has represented the church since and recently won a court order in February allowing temporary permission. New York was the only city in the nation to ban worship services at vacant public school buildings.

The Bronx Household of Faith now has a building that they are finishing up construction on, but the win helps all other area churches and makes a statement to the rest of the nation and the world.
