A 9-year-old Bronx, N.Y., boy died at Danbury Hospital on Monday, hours after being pulled from the water at Squantz Pond State Park.

The boy, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was at the park with a large group of people that included his immediate family, a state Department of Environmental Protection spokesman said.

Members of the group alerted park staff about 5:15 p.m. that the boy was missing. Minutes later a woman jumped into the water and pulled him out.

The boy was taken to the hospital by the New Fairfield emergency response team. According to the hospital spokesman at about 9:30 p.m. the boy had died.

No lifeguards were on duty at the park Monday. Signs posted in the Squantz Pond swimming area and the park entrance advise the public that no lifeguards are on duty. Park staff delivers the same warning to visitors when they arrive.
