Today, U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the Department of Transportation has allocated $1,710,232 in grant funds to the Fordham Metro-North Railroad station.
The funding will be used for station renovation including repairing a roof overhang, flashing and coping, repairing exterior walls and entrance doors, rehabbing interior space, providing drainage system, asbestos abatement and air monitoring, masonry cleaning and mortar repair, emergency lighting installation and ventilation upgrades, and refurbishing windows, doors and transoms.
“This funding is terrific news for the Fordham station and the thousands of New Yorkers who travel on this line each and every day,” Schumer said. “Not only will these funds create much needed jobs, they will fund crucial repairs at a station in need on renovation. By investing our federal dollars in these kinds of projects, we ensure the absolute best infrastructure and transportation across New York and the entire country.”
“It is vital that we invest federal dollars into upgrading New York’s aging transportation system,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These infrastructure repairs and upgrades at the Fordham station will provide the thousands of passengers who use this station every day with improved security, better air quality, and a more efficient commute.”
The Fordham Metro-North Railroad station serves the residents of the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx, New York via the Harlem Line and New Haven Line. It is 8.9 miles from Grand Central Terminal. The platforms are situated just below street level and feature two expanded platforms that serve eight cars each, on the outer tracks. The station building sits above the tracks on the Fordham Road overpass, and still bears the name New York Central Railroad on its facade. This station is among the busiest in the Metro-North system.
