New York State is the home to the largest concentration of Dominicans, and the Bronx is home to 34% of that population. This Saturday, Feb. 27, will mark 167 years since the Dominican Republic gained its independence from Haiti.

And On Wednesday, February 12, 2014, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. hosted the borough’s official Dominican Heritage Celebration to celebrate the beauty of the Dominican culture. Borough President Diaz honored leaders from the Dominican Republic who have contributed to the growth and cultural richness of Bronx.

This year’s honorees included State Senator Hon. Adriano Espaillat, local business owner Manuel Lebron, and Supreme Court Justice Hon. Julia Rodriguez.

The Borough President also presented a proclamation to Honorable Luis Lithgow, Consul General of the Dominican Republic of New York. The event was held at the Grand Slam Foundation on East Tremont Avenue and featured typical Dominican food and music.
