Bus-stop boogying could be the next big thing in Bronx, where plans to install ‘listening stations’ along one of the borough’s main public transport routes have been approved.

Created by the Design Trust for Public Space, the ‘stations’ will feature embedded speakers playing old-school tunes that celebrate the Bronx’s musical history. The track selection will be curated by the Bronx Music Heritage Center.

Commuters will also be able to read about the city’s musical history while waiting for the bus, thanks to informative plaques which will also be installed at the stations.

The concept is the brainchild of the Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco), which received US$50,000 (RM163,000) in funding from the city’s Department of Small Business Service in order to go ahead with the project. The concept was one of the winning entries in the department’s Neighborhood Challenge competition, which aims to spruce up commercial inner-city strips.

The listening stations will be installed in two bus stops along the area’s Southern Boulevard as soon as February, with plans to install more if the project is successful.
