Police say black ice was the cause of a double, chain-reaction crack up on the westbound Cross Bronx Expressway Sunday morning, that left a young mother dead and her brother badly hurt.

The victims have been identified as amateur boxer Pedro Luis, 20, and his sister, Jennifer Sosa, 19.

Police say they were traveling in a Chevy Venture with eight others, when it got into a crash with several other vehicles on an overpass.

This was around 5:49 a.m.

According to investigators, Luis and Sosa got out to inspect the damage from the first freak accident, when another one occurred. They say a 1999 Toyota Corolla careened into them, and sent them flying over a jersey carrier/wall, resulting in a 75-foot drop into the sand pit of a construction site below at the corner of Bruckner Boulevard and Brush Avenue in Unionport.

EMS rushed the Luis and Sosa to Jacobi Hospital, where doctors pronounced the young mother dead. Her brother is listed in critical condition.

The dual, chain-reaction crash which involved a total of nine vehicles, left 14 people hurt. They are expected to survive.
