Councilman Cabrera saves senior centers slated to close after negotiations with Speaker Christine Quinn.
“After long, hard-fought deliberations with my colleagues and Madame Speaker Christine Quinn, I am pleased to announce that the two senior centers slated to be closed in my district will remain open thanks to the Council restoration of funds,” said Council Member Fernando Cabrera.
The two senior centers (Tolentine Zeiser Nutrition Program, RAIN Bailey Senior Center) slated to be closed by the Mayor’s executive budget will remain open thanks to last minute efforts orchestrated by Council Member Cabrera and Speaker Christine Quinn.
“What many thought couldn’t happen, happened.” said Councilman Cabrera. “One of the centers had everything in boxes, prepared to close down services for good but at the eleventh hour, we were able to strike a deal that saved these lifelines to our community,” the councilman continued. “When it mattered most, our voices were heard.”
“I am proud to say that I have been able to serve this portion of my constituency by speaking for those who at times cannot speak for themselves,” Councilman Cabrera said. “I stood firmly with my senior centers when the cuts were announced and I stand in solidarity with them now as our efforts have lead to the restoration of funds,” he continued. “Our voices were heard, and I am grateful that the City realized the importance of keeping our centers open. I look forward to working closely with my centers in the future to help continue the invaluable service they provide to the entire community.”
