Founded in 1986, Bronx AIDS Services (BAS) is a not-for-profit community-based organization that helps more than 8,000 Bronx residents each year with services and programs that touch people who are living with HIV/AIDS, people who think they might have been exposed to HIV, and those who are at high risk of exposure to the virus.

The organization began in the early ’80s as a task force that was created by the New York State Department of Health in response to the HIV epidemic and celebrates its 25th anniversary of dedicated effort this year on September 22.

According to the New York City Department of Health, at the end of 2009, 108,886 people were living with HIV/AIDS, 22,248 in the Bronx alone.
