Between Friday, August 5, and Sunday, August 7, Red Cross emergency relief workers were busy responding to seven multi-dwelling apartment fires throughout Bronx.

These incidents, ranging from one to three alarms, left dozens of families homeless and hundreds of individuals in need of Red Cross assistance. Over this 3-day period, a total of 113 Bronx residents received some form of Red Cross assistance—emergency housing, food, water, funds for basic necessities and/or mental-health support. The largest incident was a 3-alarm fire that tore through a 6-story apartment building at 1520 Sheridan Avenue the evening of Saturday, August 6.

The other incidents included:

·         2-Alarm Fire at 3504 Rochambeau Ave. on 08/05/11
·         All-Hands fire at 452 Effingham Ave. on 08/06/11
·         2-Alarm fire at 1182 E. 178th Street on 08/06/11
·         All-Hands fire at 2508 Wilson Ave. on 08/07/11
·         All-Hands fire 458 Revere Ave. on 08/07/11
·         All-Hands fire 3474 Seymour Ave. on 08/07/11

Last year, between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010, the American Red Cross in Greater New York responded to 486 fires and other emergencies in Bronx.

About the American Red Cross:

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disaster; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
