“We are two teachers who teach second grade inclusion at PS 72x in Bronx, NY.

As part of the second grade science curriculum, our students learn about various life cycles.

In order to provide our students with a hands on, authentic science experience,  we decided to raise tadpoles into frogs in April. The students showed such responsibility and interest with this project that with the support of our principal, Ms. Colon we decided to undertake another project – raise eggs into chicks.

We worked with Quiver Farms in Pennsylvania to partake in this project.  In the classroom we read and wrote about chicks and chickens, created life cycle mobiles and much more to prepare for the arrival of the eggs.

A farmer from the farm paid us a visit and taught the students about the process and how to care for the chicks.

Students were rewarded for responsible behavior by becoming “chick masters.”  Chick masters responsibilities included checking the thermometer of the incubator, turning the eggs three times a day, moving hatched chicks to their new nest, teaching the chicks how to drink and eat and more.

The children loved to actually be a part of the process and make observations about the changes that occurred.

It was such an exciting learning experience for our students!

As teachers we believe that it is one thing for students to read and write about science, but it is completely different matter to actually observe and experience science first hand.

We would love to have our story about this positive, exciting learning experience in The Bronx Daily.

Thank you,
Susanne Metscher & Kristina Bugeya
