The Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognizes colleges and universities for their impact.

“Congratulations to Mount Saint Mary College and its students for their dedication to service and commitment to improving their local communities,” said Patrick Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “Our nation’s students are a critical part of the equation and vital to our efforts to tackle the most persistent challenges we face.”

Honorees are chosen based on factors including the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service learning.

Fr. Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, president of Mount Saint Mary College, said more than 30-40 percent of students at the Newburgh, NY campus are involved as part of their coursework in efforts benefiting area residents.

The college is renowned for its nationally accredited programs in health professions and teacher education, placing students into service at schools, hospitals, and other settings.

Mount Saint Mary College also offers studies for psychology and human services, business, communicators: “People making a difference for the better,” said Fr. Mackin. “Numerous faculty here involve their students in service, applying what they’re learning.”

“In addition to that,” he explained, “I often hear about our ongoing Knights in the Community initiative, and from places such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat, Head Start, area businesses and non-profits which our students assist regularly. I’m grateful that Mount Saint Mary College educates minds and hearts, and that our students are active beyond the classroom.”

According to a Volunteering in America study, college students make a significant contribution to the volunteer sector. The national study estimated that in 2009, 3.16 million students performed more than 300 million hours of service.
