Samantha Medina, a senior at St. Catherine Academy, has been named the female “Latino Student/Athlete of the Year” by Cablevision’s Power to Learn, in conjunction with Fox Sports en Español and TD Bank.
The “Latino Student/Athlete of the Year” program recognizes New York high school student athletes who have demonstrated achievement in the classroom and in their chosen sport. Two students – one male and one female – are selected annually.
At a ceremony at St. Catherine Academy today, Samantha was awarded a $2500 scholarship by Power to Learn for her scholastic and athletic achievements. Assemblyman Michael Benedetto also recognized her for excellence in both academics and athletics. A $1,000 donation was made to the Athletic Department at St. Catherine Academy as well.
A high achiever, Samantha excels in both basketball and softball, having earned varsity letters in each. Academically, she boasts a 4.0 GPA, has scored 1950 on her SAT exam, is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, and has received First Honors throughout her four years at St. Catherine Academy. When not practicing or studying, Samantha manages to find time to participate in the Yearbook Club, as well as volunteer at the St. Jerome Elementary School. She hopes to pursue a career in law.
Assemblyman Michael Benedetto said, “I’d like to congratulate Samantha for all that she has achieved in her four years here at St. Catherine Academy. She is truly a wonderful role model for teens today and for members of the community. I would also like to take this opportunity to applaud Cablevision for programs such as this which recognize Hispanic students and encourage them to reflect on their heritage.”
St. Catherine Academy principal Sister Ann Welch also noted, “We’d like to take this opportunity to let Samantha know how very proud we are of her and all that she has achieved. She has consistently excelled both in the classroom and on the playing field, while also finding the time to help others. Congratulations on a job well done.”
Power to Learn, Cablevision’s nationally recognized education initiative, empowers K-12 learning in the tri-state area by making technology in the classroom useful and by facilitating the home-school connection. Power to Learn’s “Triple Play for Education” is now available free of charge to more than 4,000 schools within the company’s service area in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. This initiative gives students and teachers access to Cablevision’s full suite of cable television, high-speed Internet and digital voice-over-cable services for educational use. In addition, teachers, students and parents benefit from innovative educational content and tools available on www.powertolearn.com, a broadband Web resource dedicated to facilitating K-12 learning and the home-school connection.
