Morris Heights Health Center, in partnership with Affinity Health Plan, is proud to announce the first annual “Gear-Up for the Future” Youth Event, scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Bronx Community College (BCC), located at 2155 University Avenue, Bronx, NY 10453.
The free event for young adults (ages 16 to 21) and their familieslookstocultivate learning and inspire young minds in the Bronx community to “Gear-Up for the Future” by engaging in informative panel discussions focusing on entrepreneurship, college exploration, career preparedness, and strengthening police/community relations—each session being facilitated bypanelists who are experts in their fields. The aim of these topics is to arm Bronx youth with critical skills, information and resources meant to support their aspirations of reaching professional, social and personal success in their communities and beyond.
According to the New York State Department of Education, the South Bronx has a graduation rate of just 56%, with only 12%of those who graduate considered fullycollege and/or career ready.One out of four 16-25 year olds in the South Bronx are out of school and out of work (OSOW), a rate greater than any other area in New YorkCity. Furthermore, out of the 62 counties in New York State, the Bronx has consistently ranked last in terms of health outcomes and health indicators. Simply identifying these issues in not sufficient, we want to empower our younger generation to be key proponents in addressing these issues.
