About 75 blind and visually impaired students ages 5-21 from The New York Institute for Special Education will march in protest of the proposed state budget cuts to schools for disabled students Friday, March 25th 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m, north side of Pelham Parkway from Williamsbridge Road to White Plains Road, Bronx.

State legislators have been invited to attend and march alongside the students. A public address system will be set up at the end of the rally, inviting students and legislators to share their thoughts.

The proposed state budget eliminates direct state funding for New York’s 11 4201 schools which provide specialized services for over 1,500 children who are too severely disabled to be “mainstreamed” into the general student population. The $98 million cost of educating these students would instead be shifted to financially troubled local school districts.

The New York Institute for Special Education, founded in 1831 as The New York Institute for the Education of the Blind, is one of the oldest and most respected schools in the nation that provides specialized services for children with disabilities.
