Bronx Special Olympics

About 100 preschoolers in the Readiness Program at New York Institute for Special Education (NYISE) participated in its annual Winter Olympics on Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. -12:00 p.m., in the Readiness Solarium, 985 Astor Avenue, Bronx.

Developmentally-delayed three to five-year-olds engaged in fun winter-themed activities designed to improve gross motor skills such as coordination, balance, strength and agility.

Among the Olympics-inspired games is a fun twist on luge using scooter boards, ice-skating with glittered paper plates covering the floor, and snow-ball fights with crumbled paper. A medal ceremony will follow and the children will be invited to create a large torch on the wall using pre-made painted hand-prints.

The New York Institute for Special Education, founded in 1831 as The New York Institute for the Education of the Blind, is one of the oldest and most respected schools in the nation that provides specialized services for children with disabilities.
