Our friends at La Sopa (School of Poetic Arts) are still registering folks for their summer installment of poetry-focused programs at the Loisaida Center in the Lower East Side.

Join us this Saturday for Poetry Town Hall at Poe with Poet Urayoán Noel and Historian Angel Hernández:

June 18, 2016 during the hours of 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

BRIO-winning poet and educator Urayoán Noel was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and will present a reading of his Bronx-inspired bilingual poetry at the Poe Park Visitor Center, followed by a discussion with program adviser Ángel Hernández of the Bronx County Historical Society. They will discuss Poe’s impoverished life in the Bronx and the social forces that inspire poetic expression by artists on the margins.

Bronx Writers Center Director Charlie Vázquez will moderate the concluding town hall discussion and the parallels between Poe’s difficult years in the Bronx and the struggles of the Puerto Rican community. This event is supported by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities.
