People’s Hearing On School Justice
The Youth on the Move (YOM), in coalition with Bronx community organizations, has been organizing in response to the recent shocking data released by the NYPD on the rates of student arrests and summonses to appear in court.
Bronx has the highest rate of both. In March we held a press conference, and in May we held the “Education Not Incarceration” march to the Horizon Juvenile Jail. We will close out the school year in a big way by holding a “People’s Hearing on School Justice.” There, parents, students, teachers, school staff and others will share their stories and raise their voices. We will call for effective programs like conflict resolution and peer mediation as well as more social workers to be placed inside our Bronx schools, so students receive the social and emotional support they need and are not tracked into the criminal justice system.
We are inviting the Department of Education and NYPD School Safety Division to listen but also, community leaders, faith leaders, and elected officials. Both the DOE and SSD have confirmed their attendance, which makes this a monumental and truly unique forum for the public to raise their concerns and collaborate on developing ideas for change. We will also have Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson and State Senator Gustavo Rivera present.
Will you join us? The People’s Hearing is currently scheduled for Monday, June 25th from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., at Christ the King School. The school is located at 1345 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10452.
