Bronx Small Business Community Unites To Hold Public Forum On The Future Of Small Business
Small Businesses in Bronx are facing a crisis and fighting for their survival.
As real estate speculation across NYC continues, long established businesses are in danger of being forced to close due to exorbitant rents and unfair lease terms.
To address this crisis, residents and the small business owners in the Bronx are joining together to discuss solutions to the crisis facing the Bronx small business community. This crisis has been defined by abuses and injustices occurring across the city with rent hikes forcing long established businesses to close, jobs being lost, wages cut, art and cultural institutions shuttered, and the disappearance of the major pathway for low income families to achieve social mobility.
TakeBackNYC and The Bronx Times are sponsoring this forum to hold an honest and public debate about the merits of various proposed solutions to the small business crisis. Hosting a panel of experts in small business development and the economic impacts of inaction, the forum will explore 3 solutions currently being proposed as well as a solution already introduced as a bill in the New York City Council. These proposals are:
- Zoning changes
- Relocation of storefront businesses after loss of lease
- Small Business Jobs Survival Act (bill currently in the NYC Council which gives commercial tenants equal lease negotiating rights as the landlord)
- Property tax credits for commercial property owners
In addition, we are honored to have New York City Council Member Annabel Palma (Bronx, District 18) offer welcoming remarks and the context for this forum. We are also thankful to our additional sponsors of the forum including The New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce, The Bronx Merchant Coalition, Townsquared and Jetro.
