The New York State Assembly/Senate Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force held a statewide interactive Town Hall meeting on Economic Development this week, bringing together representatives of the Hispanic community from Buffalo, Rochester, Amsterdam, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Long Island.

HITN and Time Warner Cable formatted the meetings so that all attendees could see and hear from participants attending in all of the regions across the state.

The statewide Town Hall meeting was done in correlation with the regional Economic Development Council conference held by Governor Andrew Cuomo and former President Bill Clinton, in Albany, highlighting the issue of our unemployment in our state.

Topics addressed during the interactive Town Hall meeting included: how government can help to free up financial capital investments and the issue of regulations and administrative policies that impede workforce development.

The Town Hall meeting was moderated by the Task Force Chair, Assemblyman Felix W. Ortiz. The New York State legislators who lead the discussions and served as local moderators at each location across the state were; Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez in Manhattan, Assemblyman Nelson Castro in the Bronx, Assemblyman Jose Rivera in Bronx, Assemblyman Philip Ramos in Long Island, and Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb in Rochester. Also participating were Mayor Anne M. Thane of Amsterdam, Lourdes Iglesias representing Hispanics United of Buffalo.

“The  Task Force’s Town Hall meeting was the first of its kind, uniting Hispanic voices across the state on the very serious issue of job loss and the need for stronger economic development. This meeting brought a multitude of new ideas that highlighted the importance of creating new jobs opportunities for New Yorkers and will help government leaders shape policies in the coming year ,” said Assemblyman Felix Ortiz.

The video of the statewide Town Hall meeting will be available for viewing on Time Warner Cable’s “On Demand” channel and on the Somos New York website here.
