Come join us for our annual Senior Thursday event celebrating Older Americans Month with BRIO award winning artist Michele Brody.

The Bronx CommuniTea will include an herbal tea pairing workshop with herbalist Ursula Basch and Jo Ani Johnson of A Gift of Tea to pair with a healthy dish by Chef Kareem, an exhibition tour and a culminating performance to celebrate the hopeful recovery for Puerto Rico with Bronx’s own Dr. Drum and BombaYo.

The Bronx CommuniTea is a social “happening” that focuses on building community relationships and bridging cultural boundaries through the contemplative art of sharing tea. Working with the magic elixir of tea, Michele Brody is entering her fourth year of bringing poets, story tellers, dancers, musicians, chefs and visual artists together to partake in a tea pairing with healthy meals as a platform for sharing diverse personal stories to inspire collaborative arts-based activities.

Throughout the month of May, Michele Brody has scheduled a series of CommuniTeas at three Senior Centers in Bronx culminating in a fourth and final collaborative presentation at The Bronx Museum. During each CommuniTea, participants are welcomed with a ritual offering of loose-leaf tea. The teas are paired with a meal inspired by the diverse cultural make up of The Bronx with an emphasis on healthy, vegetarian food preparation and presentation. During each tea pairing, participants are guided to write about the tastes and smells they encounter on note papers made from the dried, stained tea filters used to brew the tea. The filters are then added to Brody’s artwork “Reflections in Tea,” an evolving set of paper quilts.

During four Bronx CommuniTea events in May of 2018, Michele Brody will continue her collaboration with tea consultant Jo-Ani Johnson and chef Kareem Gonsalves to develop a unique pairing of organic SerendipiTea teas with exciting healthy dishes inspired by the extraordinary cultural mix of Bronx communities.
