One person is dead and another in critical condition after a fire tore through an apartment building at Marble Hill Housing on West 225th Street. Witnesses reported seeing large flames and heavy smoke in the area as firefighters battled the blaze.

Charles Cherry, who lives nearby, said he heard cries for help and even saw one of the residents of the apartment inside touch the glass. A man and woman were pulled out of the building. The woman's face, according to witnesses, was badly burned and paramedics had to perform chest compressions for several minutes on the man before sending him to a nearby hospital.

Fire officials say the fire was contained to the second floor apartment, but are still investigating what caused the fire.
