The son of a sweatshop tailor, he started life living above a pickle shop in the Bronx and ended it owning a Cape Cod-style home on a stretch of Malibu called Billionaire's Beach.

Born in 1919 in New York City to immigrants from Russia, Silverman was the youngest of four children. He spoke with a pronounced stutter for much of his life.

Silverman, who retired in 2001, died April 17 of congestive heart failure at his vacation home in Bellingham, WA., said his wife, Davey. He was 90.

I am very sorry to hear this about Mike Silverman. I knew him from Beverly Hills, he was both a friend of my fathers and mine. I will miss seeing him and the cap he sported.
